Last night San Francisco held the first ever Red Bull Music Academy Culture Clash hosting a wild music competition between four big music crews. In the Regency Ballroom, Claude VonStroke and his Dirtybird label went up against dancehall natives Dub Mission, DJ champions Triple Threat, and Tropicália pioneers Tormenta Tropical. The four teams performed in front of the crowd and competed for their favor showing of their live performances and joined by some very special guests.
When it comes to special guests, Dirtybird decided to go big. West Coast hip hop legend Too $hort and super trio Major Lazer took to the stage and were joined by what appears to be two very famous robots. According to witnesses, Daft Punk were in the building and playing the classic electronic anthem “Around The World” decked out in their glittering suits. Now we’re still awaiting confirmation as to whether the French duo was truly there in flesh, but according to a slew of other reports, this might be one of those rare occasions where Thomas and Guy actually performed live.
Even with massive acclaim from the crowd, Dirtybird did not win the Culture Clash. The victory went to Triple Threat proving that it doesn’t matter who you bring to the show, it’s what they bring to the table.
This may have been a massive stunt Dirtybird pulled dressing up two of their crew members in the iconic helmets or maybe they were joined by the real Thomas Bangalter and Guy Manuel de Homem-Christo. Until more comes out, it is all up to speculation.
