Selection Sunday 002

Bands originating from the UK always manage to impress me. From the world-renowned Radiohead to widely popular Muse, award-winning Coldplay to chart-topping Franz Ferdinand, and of course not forgetting the legendary Beatles who helped set the stage for all of this, I can always find something to satisfy my cravings for alternative and indie rock, pop, and folk music.

Bombay Bicycle Club is another favorite of mine. From the northern part of London, one of my favorite cities in the world to visit, this band brings a variety of sounds to the table in their latest album A Different Kind of Fix. The album begins with the song How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep, opening with acoustic guitar and transitioning into a more flavorful indie rock sound that makes me think of the early morning moments when your minds fades from dream to reality. Their hit song Shuffle has a repetitive yet very fun piano sequence that creates a bouncy driving beat. The song Your Eyes has a catchy bass guitar phrase that fades away into dreamy vocal repetition. Lead singer Jack Steadman (like most British singers in my opinion) has an addictive voice, probably attributed to that dreamy British accent. The album ends with the song Still, and with only melancholy vocals over piano, it’s a contrast from the previous tracks. Being your typical sad love lullaby, it’s a calm and lingering ending to the album that ties together the recurring piano theme.

Overall, Bombay Bicycle Club creates the perfect soundtrack to a sunny road trip, your daily routine for getting ready in the morning, or hanging out at home with friends as the night rolls in. If you appreciate new indie rock like I do, please give this album a listen and I doubt you’ll be disappointed.
