I know that as an EDM journalist, I should be keeping up with as many styles and genres at possible at all times. Realistically, sometimes it’s just not possible. My main focuses and interests lie in dubstep, drum & bass and glitch hop. So when all of this future garage started breaking ground thanks to Disclosure (correct me if I’m wrong, please), it really took me by surprise.
It seems like the new big room trend, to me at least – it may not have quite as much momentum behind it, but certainly greater diversity and quality of sound. So imagine my happiness when CRNKN dropped this beautifully crafted mix a few days ago. I had the pleasure of seeing CRNKN in Los Angeles last month, but the sound cut out twice during his set, and I feel like I wasn’t able to get a good feel for his sound. From what I heard then, I don’t think his set would have turned out quite like this.
Mixing for a SoundCloud set and for a live audience are two entirely different endeavors, so that doesn’t come as a surprise. But the depth and skill in this mix definitely exceed expectations. There’s a definite unifying sound, but each individual piece is so wonderful on its own, and that is exactly what makes this mix so forward-thinking.
It can be said that with EDM the way that it currently is, there are many different branches the community can follow as it continues to evolve. For what it’s worth, I expect this particular branch to grow far and wide, and it’s going to be very hard for it to be cut down if tracks/mixes with this quality keep coming out.
