“Instant Crush,” the third single off of Daft Punk’s “Random Access Memories” has finally received its own music video, posted earlier today on YouTube. While both “Get Lucky” and “Lose Yourself to Dance” are very stylistically similar, “Instant Crush” takes a rapidly different approach.
Whereas the two previous videos feature shots of the French duo performing with Pharrell Williams and Nile Rogers in various sparkly suits, Daft Punk never actually appears on screen in “Instant Crush.” Instead, the video alternates between shots of a solo Julian Casablancas singing to an empty room and the love story of two life-sized dolls in a museum.
While the concept sounds a bit odd, it is very successfully done. Leave it to Daft Punk to successfully narrate the love story of two inanimate objects without ever surrendering to the cheesy tendency of having them “come to life.” Instead, the narration is told with poignant shots of their faces as museum employees drag them around, placing them in exhibits and later leaving them to rot in a storeroom.
