The path of Diffrent Music and the type of sounds they release has always been, well, different. The work of label head Dexta and other artists who’ve released on the label like Hyroglfics, Andy Pain, Mauoq and Fearful has always been on the leading edge of bass music since Dexta started it ten years ago. The proof? The second and seminal track off Diffrent’s now massive discography, Chills’ dark halftime thriller, “Everyone’s Mad.” This track defined halftime before anyone even knew what halftime was, and now the genre may be even more popular than its progenitor, drum & bass.
Diffrent Music has continued to turn out some of the most cutting-edge and futuristic tracks in the bass music game since “Everyone’s Mad.” It’s a label truly that’s stayed ahead of its time, mostly because it features artist who are ahead of their time. Ten years later, the label’s latest release, the Collisions EP by Mtwn and Fearful shows Diffrent are still on the leading edge with its dark, emotive rebrand of breakbeat and garage. It’s chillingly good stuff, and a perfect example of why Diffrent’s been able to keep going with its genreless, progressive sound.
To celebrate ten years in the game, Diffrent plans to release a massive compilation album later this year which will feature original tracks and remixes from up-and-coming artists and Diffrent darlings alike. As part of putting together this compilation and in the Diffrent spirit of always giving a platform to different artists, the label has also launched a remix contest, open to any producer who’d like to try their hand at being “Diffrent.”
And which track will be on the literal production chopping block for this very “Diffrent” opportunity? It’s the track that started it all, of course: “Everyone’s Mad” by Chills. From the label itself, “Label boss Dexta still uses this track as a benchmark for all other Diffrent releases, so if you can nail a remix of it, we’d love to have you as part of the family.” Sounds like a good remix could lead to other things and at the very least to be featured on this great upcoming comp.
The entry process is easy. Diffrent’s released the stems from “Everyone’s Mad” for producers to grab and make their own. Click here for a direct link to the stem files as well as the full press release and rules for the contest. Once your remix is done, simply upload it to the Differnt Demo Drop page and follow the instructions. The site will ask for an MP3 upload at first, so don’t be alarmed when you see that request. The contest also asks that entrants upload their tracks to their individual Soundcloud pages with the hashtag #DiffrentRemixComp. That’s it! The contest ends on Wednesday, July 1 at 12pm BST and there’s no limit to the number of tracks you can submit.
Good luck to all the entrants and happy anniversary to Diffrent Music!
