Halloween can manifest itself in a lot of different ways. You could find joy in giving others candy when they come to your door, you can dress up and go out partying, or you could turn your porch lights off and enjoy the fact that your roommates are out of the house for the night and cozy up with a good book and a cup of hot cocoa…
In the same way, Halloween can present itself differently in music. We’ve already seen dozens of bass music mixes come out to celebrate the horror filled nights, with one of the biggest still on its way, but how about house?
The groovy genre doesn’t typically have that sort of growling, impending-doom type of sound to it, so how do you make it spooky? You up the suspense, the darkness, the looming sense of unease. It’s not an easy task by any means, but Lane 8 accomplishes the task spectacularly.
While two hours for a mix might seem like a hefty task, as well, á la BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix, Lane 8 goes beyond that for 140 minutes of groovy, dark, foreboding house that flows like a demon into the night. Even listening to it in the morning will give you a bit of a boost going into the day. Listening at night, well… that’s another story entirely.
