Marijuana Measures Pass In 7 Out Of 9 States

LOS ANGELES, CA - OCTOBER 19: Dave Warden, a bud tender at Private Organic Therapy (P.O.T.), a non-profit co-operative medical marijuana dispensary, displays various types of marijuana available to patients on October 19, 2009 in Los Angeles, California. Attorney General Eric Holder announced new guidelines today for federal prosecutors in states where the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes is allowed under state law. Federal prosecutors will no longer trump the state with raids on the southern California dispensaries as they had been doing, but Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley recently began a crackdown campaign that will include raids against the facilities. Cooley maintains that virtually all marijuana dispensaries are in violation of the law because they profit from their product. The city of LA has been slow to come to agreement on how to regulate its 800 to 1,000 dispensaries. Californians voted to allow sick people with referrals from doctors to consume cannabis with the passage of state ballot Proposition 215 in 1996 and a total of 14 states now allow the medicinal use of marijuana. While the results of last night’s presidential election leaves a nation divided, we’ve also taken a large step forward in the fight for legalization of marijuana.

Measures allowing for full or limited legalization of cannabis were up for vote in 9 states last night: California, Massachusetts and Nevada have voted to legalize recreational marijuana in their states, while Arizona rejected its measure and Maine is still too close to call this afternoon.

Florida, North Dakota and Arkansas have also all voted to legalize medical marijuana. In Montana, a measure was approved to remove limitations on medical marijuana.

This is about more than just being able to spark up at a festival, or about “associating EDM with drugs.” Nearly 100 million Americans have used marijuana, and according to government surveys, some 25 million Americans have smoked marijuana in the past year, and more than 14 million do so regularly.

People speak of marijuana as a gateway drug. Well, hopefully the legalization of marijuana becomes a gateway for the American government and its citizens to take a closer look at harm reduction, legalization and regulation in relation to other substances such as MDMA and psilocybin, which have both been show to have potentially major medical benefits.
