EDM Is Officially A Sport, People Are Betting On Who Will Headline Coachella

As the popular online Sports Betting Dime has published their odds of who will headline Coachella 2017, it sounds like electronic dance music has officially become a sport. With all this excitement surrounding Daft Punk’s long-awaited return, rumors of Swedish House Mafia reuniting, and even hints of Radiohead embarking on a world tour, next year’s picks are going to be difficult at the very least.

Daft Punk leads the running with a 4:1 chance of slapping their name on the headlining slot of Coachella. Their previous Alive tours have all been spaced out by the decade, with one in 1997, and another in 2007, making Alive 2017 a very real hypothesis. In fact, their pyramid debut at Coachella in 2006 was easily one of the most influential dance events of all time, so it’s not a stretch to think they’ll follow up with an even greater spectacle.

Radiohead comes in second with 8:1 odds, and like Daft Punk, their last Coachella performance was over four years ago in 2012. There’s been a lot of discussion surrounding their next studio album, which would greatly bump up their chances of featuring in the famed California arts festival. Even though the British group has been playing a show here and there (they played a headlining spot at Iceland’s Secret Solstice festival earlier this year), they’ve been slinging tickets to an upcoming world tour, which greatly tips things in their favor.

Swedish House Mafia is the last of the electronic dance giants to be speculated to return in 2017. Though the odds of it happening are 15:1, SHM returning to Coachella would call the end to a delicate five year hiatus since their split in 2012 at the height of popularity. Even a one-off reunion for the festival would be a massive draw for fans from all corners of the map.

The XX, Depeche Mode, and The Killers are a few more electronically leaning groups in the betting pool for Coachella 2017, but we’ll have to wait and see how the entire scenario plays out.
