Sony Ends the Era of Europe’s Most Popular Independent Label

The last 20 years of electronic music would not have been the same had it not been for The Ministry of Sound. They have built a sturdy foundation for themselves and the industry, boasting 70 million album sales worldwide, 40 UK number one albums, and 21 number one singles. With London Grammar, DJ Fresh, and Sigala on your label, it’s hard not to be that successful. They hope to expand even more with their most recent news.

The night club turned prominent multimedia entertainment business was bought by Sony Music UK. The Ministry of Sound has nothing but good words to say about them selling the company to Sony as The Ministry feels Sony will be able to take the once local based label to a much broader, global scale.

Lohan Presencer, Ministry of Sound Group Chief Executive, said, “I’m delighted we have found the right home to grow Ministry of Sound Recordings at a global level while keeping its unique identity.  Sony Music is a world-class company that understands our ethos of exceptional curration and developing young talent.”

Sony also seems very excited about the acquisition of the revolutionary label. Edgar Berger, Chairman and CEO of the International division of Sony Music Entertainment, said: “Ministry’s success story is exceptional and the acquisition is an important milestone in our growth strategy. We welcome the opportunity to further internationalize the footprint of this legendary British independent record label.”

The new chapters for both The Ministry of Sound and Sony sounds like an exciting one!
