Today, the Food and Drug Administration took measures to impose federal regulatory measures on the e-cigarette market after witnessing an over 900% increase in usage by high school students over the last 5 years, according to The Secretary of Health and Human Services. As the sales of e-cigarette and vaping products have risen sharply, the marketplace has run without oversight or regulation.
Following in the footsteps of California’s recent ban on the sale of tobacco to those under 21 years of age, the new 499-page document bans the sale of e-cigs to anyone under 18 and requires buyers under 26 to show identification during the time of purchase.
Already-established vape juice companies have two years to apply for FDA approval, according to VICE. The new FDA measures are expected to go into effect in 90 days.
