If you like your bass music dark and gritty, it’s almost impossible to not have come across My Nu Leng before. The Bristolian duo have rose to prominence over recent years with their genre-defying sound that draws inspiration from garage, dubstep and house. Originals such as “Masterplan” and “Levels” featuring veteran UK grime collective Newham Generals have caused riots across the globe, with just as much bass work going into their reworks for Naughty Boy, Clean Bandit & Zed Bias. With a curated tour, FABRICLIVE mix CD and upcoming American appearances on the way, the boys are always up to something. We sat down with Tommy and Jammo aka My Nu Leng to talk about what they’ve got in store over the rest of the year.
You’re about to drop the My Nu Leng FABRICLIVE mix CD. What can listeners expect from this project?
It is a representation of all the different styles of My Nu Leng and the music we are feeling right now – We wanted the mix to be timeless to listen to but also something you can play before or after going out – to also have that club aspect!
The series is a coveted award for any DJ. How did you go about selecting tracks for the CD?
We wanted to give a lot of support to underground UK artists to really show the strength of music coming out of the UK right now. We hit up all our favourite producers and asked for specials or VIP’s and luckily a fair few came back with some amazing tracks!
What are some of your favourite FABRICLIVE mix CDs that you looked to for inspiration when creating this?
We were both heavily inspired by Caspa & Rusko as well as High Contrast and DJ Hype’s. Constant listening as a kid – it really made us understand the importance of the mix series and how it would be a dream one day to be part of it.
My Nu Leng & M8s is the name of your current tour where you bring along some big names in bass music. Is this something you’ve been wanting to do for a while?
We started it in Bristol as a quick tester to see how it would work, it sold out months in advance and was one of our favourite nights we have played at. So, we took it on a small tour of the UK and have sold out every date. It is a huge thing for us to be able to bring in our friends and showcase their talents and put on a huge party at the same time!
In March, you’re embarking on a USA tour B2B with Oneman. It already sound likes it’s going to be full of insane parties and crazy blends. Do you ever alter your DJ style when playing internationally?
We try represent our UK sound to the fullest – it is important for us for people to come see us play and get a feeling of the UK underground and what it is all about. We have some big B2B all night sessions with Oneman so I am sure we will be going on some long journeys through lots of different styles too.
I saw you two at Leeds last year, and it went off! What are some of the secret weapons your playing in your sets at the moment?
Our latest track with Flava D ‘Soul Shake’ has been going off! We also have new music coming with Fine Art and Champion which should be surfacing very soon.
Who are 3 producers that need to be on our radar?
Andrew Diggs, Holy Goof and Mikey B for that bassline influenced madness!
What are your future plans for the rest of 2016?
Our Fabriclive CD is out on 18th March and we have a colab with Flava D – Soul Shake out on MTA Records now! We can’t wait to tour USA and Canada and then really get amongst the festivals this summer!
