The prominent rise of electronic dance music in today’s scene can be evidenced by many of the artists now standing alongside and competing next to established genre artists from rock, pop, hip-hop, country and many more. As EDM continues to charge into the mainstream culture, many music award shows are recognizing many of our musicians and displaying them to a greater audience. Most recently, the American Music Awards joins the fray with their latest nominations for their favorite electronic dance music artist.
This year’s AMA nominations includes three of the biggest names in pop electronic music at the moment. From radio chart-topper Calvin Harris to legendary French musician David Guetta to overnight rookie-turned-superstar sensation Zedd, these three nominees are in hot contention to take home the biggest award in their genre. If you don’t think any of these artists have any place taking this award home, just keep in mind that all three of these artists have dropped major albums in the last year and have continued to play shows all around the world throughout the year. Even if one doesn’t care for their craft, one can appreciate the hustle that has earned each of these artists their nominations.
Even though across the other categories electronic dance music appears scarce, Jack Ü and Justin Bieber‘s song “Where Are Ü Now” has been nominated for “Collaboration Of The Year” and is up against “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars, “Bad Blood” by Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar, and many more major collaborative tracks that have been released this year. It may not be a pure EDM category, but the nod to Jack Ü shows that even in the American Music Awards, electronic dance music is a major facet of the mainstream music world.
