“People have asked about the ‘Dislike’ button for many years … and today is a special day, because today is the day that I actually get to say we are working on it and are very close to shipping a test of it.”
Those are the words of Facebook CEO & founder Mark Zuckerberg, who unveiled the new project in a public Q&A. But, let’s take a deeper look into the ideas behind the upcoming ‘dislike’ button.
Many have voiced their desire for such a function in an attempt to show their disdain for certain topics on their newsfeed, however Zuckerberg has other plans for it. He wants to introduce the ‘dislike’ feature as a means of showing empathy, for when someone shares a sad status or article, rather than using the feature like Reddit does: with up- and down-voting.
“We don’t want to turn Facebook into a forum where people are voting up or down on people’s posts. That doesn’t seem like the kind of community that we want to create: you don’t want to go through the process of sharing some moment that was important to you in your day and have someone downvote it.”
Although we’re still awaiting more information regarding this new system and whether it will apply to us at Your EDM on our media-driven Facebook page, there’s no doubt that this could truly make for a mess of things if not properly executed with the sheer amount of trolls and naysayers on the Facebook platform. But, only time will tell.
