It’s been a little over a week since Armin van Buuren dropped his latest single, an exciting collaboration with rising techno superstar Reinier Zonneveld, “We Can Dance Again.” Featuring vocals from house music legend Roland Clark, “We Can Dance Again” is not only a unique collab from two seemingly opposite ends of the music spectrum’ it’s also a joyful declaration! After so long in isolation, we can all dance again. Combining Armin’s melodic sensibilities and Zonneveld’s deep, pulsing techno beats, this is a true best-of-both worlds track.
We got the chance to have a brief chat with Armin about teaming up with Reinier Zonneveld, getting back on the road, and how keeping things fresh after all these years. Here’s what he had to say.
Hey Armin! Thanks so much for chatting with us. Tell us about your latest track with Reinier Zonneveld “We Can Dance Again.” You’ve always had a knack for seeking out new talent and blending your style with others. How did this collaboration come about?
“‘We Can Dance Again’ all revolves around the message of the track, as you’d expect. Lots of people need to let loose in the dance floor to express themselves, and they had to do without that outlet throughout the pandemic. My collab with Reinier Zonneveld means to light that fire in people again and to impart that the worst is – hopefully – behind us and they can soon be themselves again. As for the collab itself: I’ve been a huge fan of Reinier’s work lately and his incredible techno sound is just what you’d want to hear when you set foot on the dance floor again after such a long time. I also felt it would blend quite nicely with my own sound, so that made this collab a no-brainer.”
How does it feel to finally be back on the road touring? I know you brought ASOT to Mexico and Ultra Miami is coming up as well. Where else might we expect to see you this year?
“Lots of different places, hopefully. There’s A State Of Trance in Poland and L.A., Tomorrowland Winter in France, and I hope I’m finally able to do my ‘This Is Me’ shows in Amsterdam, the Netherlands this year. There are lots of other countries I’ll also be playing this year (some already confirmed, some still pending), and I’m just really happy I can connect with fans from all over the world again.”
I’m sure you’ve got tons of new music lined up for this year. How do you manage to strike a balance between exploring new sounds and making tunes for the hardcore ASOT fans?
“I’ve got my Rising Star moniker for the full-on Trance records, and I quite often release more Trance-oriented Club Mixes of tracks that weren’t initially suited for that stylistic approach. And there’s my A State Of Trance radio show of course, which will forever remain a beacon for Trance fans from all over the world. I love that balance. I’m free to experiment whenever inspiration gives me a nudge in a different direction, but still love producing trance as well.”
After such a long and illustrious career, how do you manage to keep things fun and exciting? How do you manage to stay engaged with what you’re working on?
“Part of it is being able to experiment with other styles whenever I feel like it. As a musician, I want to keep learning and to keep developing myself on an artistic level, simply because it’s new, fresh, fun and exciting. And I am a music lover first and foremost. That will never change.”
Finally, what’s your take on where you think the industry will head in a post-pandemic world?
“Who knows, we might just find ourselves in another Roaring Twenties era again. But for now, all that matters is that ‘We Can Dance Again’!”
