Acid house is always a welcomed sound to explore and groove through. From pioneers like Kevin Saunderson on “Rock to the Beat” to more mainstream, modern guys like Calvin Harris on “Slow Acid,” the genre continues to pop up as a significant influence on house music. Proving this point, Russian producers Proxy and DZA put acid house on a pristine pedestal with “Hater.”
With a tinge of techno, Proxy and DZA come together on “Hater” and make magic. It starts with a thumping kick and a sinister, whispering voice muttering one word on the fourth beat. The 303’s work appears shortly after bringing that acid house sound incrementally into the track. When “Hater” unleashes the drop, the a huge, deep horn blasts like the sound of a tugboat’s foghorn. From there, the dark techno flavor wraps around the acid house body for the most excellent experience of rhythm, energy, and rave.
“Hater” is a proper banger from these two. Much like their previous collaboration “Poltora” on Proxy’s Collusion EP, “Hater” explores a menacing side to house music. It’s the sound you’d expect to hear at 2 in the morning in a warehouse littered with club fiends dancing the night away.
