The legend, Paul van Dyk, has finally released his highly anticipated, 10th studio album, Guiding Light. The album is 14 tracks of pure, high-energy trance that will have you yearning for the dancefloor. While PvD is well known for his trademark brand of uplifting, progressive trance, Guiding Light is short on the more radio friendly singles and it’s clear that Paul was going for a total club record here.
In fact, that’s precisely why the album was delayed from its original release date earlier in the year. With the world in the grips of the COVID-19 pandemic, PvD didn’t feel it right to release an album full of high-energy 135+ BPM bangers. Over time, Paul saw the power of the singles, and decided to give the green light for the release. And, boy, are we glad he did! Guiding Light is a burst of adrenaline and a sonic journey.
There have already been a handful of singles released, including the title track. “Covered in Gold” has to be the most trademark PvD track on the album. It’s his trademark uplifting trance with an emotional female vocal. If you’re trying to workout or get the blood flowing, I recommend starting right at “You Found Me.” It establishes the tone and energy of the ensuing tracks with it’s high BPM. “Exhale,” “Awakening,” and “Remedy” are all high energy bangers that will take you back to those late-aught’s raves. Finally, the last two tracks on the album “Galaxy” and “Velvet Sky” see PvD dabble in psy-trance and acid, respectively.
