A new electro-pop group has a single out today that deserves some attention. The group, known as Moodshift, have a simultaneous quality of familiarity and modernity in their new song “Chemistry.” But how can this group have captured both of these elements when coming seemingly out of nowhere?
Well, it turns out that Moodshift is a supergroup comprised of several top-tier songwriters and producers. For starters, there’s Lucas Nord, a Grammy winner most well known for working with Tove Lo and John Dahlbäck. Then there’s flyckt who served as the vocalist for the indie-pop trio Urban Cone and recently appeared on the latest Galantis album Church. Finally, there’s Oliver Nelson who is most well known for collaborating with Kygo and officially remixing big names like Kesha and Niall Horan as well as electronic staples like Todd Terry and Cazzette.
They’ve had an extensive history in the past decade working together and around each other through loose collaborations and remixes. But as Moodshift, this is the first time the trio is working together on such a focused endeavor.
With “Chemistry,” it’s clear that Moodshift is pulling from their respective experience writing dance-pop ear worms. The love song lyrics and the gentle synths blend with ease. Vocal chopping and warping work their way through to the drop and land succinctly with the minimalist beat. “Chemistry” then teases a strong piano chord on the half-beat that solidify the song’s true infectious nature.
On the surface and at its core, “Chemistry” is a sappy-love dance tune that echoes the sounds of pop’s past into a relatable mood in 2020. It delivers blissfully fun rhythm and sets the foundation for what I think Moodshift want their sound to be.
