French Senate Passes New “Anti-Rave” Legislation

The French Senate just passed new “anti-rave” legislation to “strengthen the supervision of rave parties and sanctions against their organizers.”

Under the new proposal, gatherings of 500 people or fewer must “declare” with the local mayor’s office a month in advance, at least. There are also new parameters set on noise levels, deadlines for paperwork, etc.

These regulations, if ignored, are punishable up to a €3,750 fine — a huge blow to promoters or party throwers just starting up. To make matters worse for ravers, there’s also potential seizure of equipment including sound systems and DJ gear.

“They are basically passing the law that the UK passed in the ’90s,” producer Jennifer Cardini revealed exclusively to Resident Advisor. “I find this scary and devastating.”

“It is a way to make sure that it’s very difficult for young people to organize a party,” she added. “It’s already difficult to get permits, other authorizations — the paperwork is huge.”

The bill is heading to the National Assembly next, the final step before becoming law.
