Steve Angello Explains Swedish House Mafia Cancellation At Weekend Festival

After Swedish House Mafia’s scheduled performance at Ultra Europe in Croatia on July 14, they were scheduled to head to Weekend Festival in Finland five days later. Unfortunately, as we know now, that performance was eventually cancelled, citing “production issues that can’t be fixed short notice.” With such a vague explanation, fans were left to speculate on their own whether this was a cop out or a legitimate excuse.

Now, an apparent conversation with Steve Angello that went down in the DMs has been shared by @shmworldwide, a Swedish House Mafia community page, that aims to explain the absence.

“Our backline equipment broke after the rain in Poland [Gdynia-Kosakowo Airport] so we played off a reserve in norway [Stavernfestivalen] and Croatia [Ultra Europe] and the Croatian one was local so couldn’t take that on tour with us. Ours is back on track again next week.”

He continued, “We don’t do normal Dj sets anymore. We play off synths, drum machines and samplers so it’s not as easy as plug and play like most Dj acts out there.

“If something breaks we’re fucked.”

@shmworldwide tried to reason with Angello, “But if you let us all know this, then people don’t get upset.”

Angello responded, “People always get upset regardless. Not much we can do. We lose shitloads of money every time we […]” and then it gets cut off. It can be assumed he means “every time we cancel a show” but that cannot be confirmed.

Regardless, it’s good to have at least some sort of reason for the cancellation other than the rumors that the group, Sebastian Ingrosso, Steve Angello, and Axwell, were just back in it for the money.

Swedish House Mafia’s final performance in July is scheduled for the 26th at Ushuaia in Ibiza, followed by Frequency Festival in Austria on August 16, Openair Festival in Switzerland on August 23, and then Creamfields in the UK on August 25. They then have two final dates on this tour in September — maybe then a US tour? Who knows at this point.
