New York City‘s nightlife is thriving!
The New York Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment has released its first-ever comprehensive impact study of local nightlife. According to results from its recent study, the industry supports 299,000 jobs and pays out $13.1 billion to its employees, with a whopping $35.1 billion output.
Over 80-pages, the report details NYC’s nightlife, which includes 25,000 establishments across the city’s five boroughs. Brooklyn experienced the biggest explosion in nightlife over the past year. Queens’ nightlife is also on the rise. 
The $35.1 billion in total economic output is obviously a hefty sum — with a huge chunk going straight back to the city in the form of $697 million worth of local taxes.
Results are reassuring, despite the closing of iconic venues such as Webster Hall and Output. Webster Hall plans to make a comeback in 2019 and Output hopes to go on in some capacity in the future.
The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment’s Senior Executive Director, Ariel Palit explains why it’s so important to express these findings. “We’re looking at this data as a roadmap to what really needs to be addressed,” she says.
“In the past, the presumption of nightlife has been that it’s in the dark. But in actuality, it’s really the other 9 to 5. And it’s a huge part of the economy that needs to be taken seriously with respect and support to make sure it thrives and survives.”
