New Artist Profile: Anne Steele Makes The Transition to Dance Music With a Sound That’s ‘Made Out of Stars’ [Video]

Not to be confused with the Moby song “We Are All Made of Stars,” well-known NYC singer and recording artist Anne Steele has thrown her hat into the EDM ring with her latest EP, Made Out of Stars. It’s an unlikely pairing, as Steele is mostly known for Broadway/Cabaret-style singing with a pop or jazz flair, and she’s certainly gained recognition in the live singing world. She’s worked with Cyndi Lauper, performing at Lauper’s Home for the Holidays concert to benefit the True Colors Fund and she’s a three-time winner of the Manhattan Association of Cabaret and Club Award.

Steele’s first EP was very much in keeping with the style she’s known for in New York and she easily could have kept going in that direction. It seems she wanted to try her chops at dance music writing and production, possibly to get out of her comfort zone, and Made Out of Stars is a great first effort.

There are a few conventional pop songs on the EP  which show the true power of Steele’s perfectly tuned voice, including a cover of the Tears for Fears song, “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.”  Where things get really exciting for dance fans, however, is three tracks in with a remix of the track “Love Can Take Us There” by Nash and Overstreet. The original version of this track was incidentally chosen as the 2016 official Provincetown Carnival Anthem and Steele is very active in the LGTB cause.

The tracks following the “Love Can Take Us There” remix are equally fun and dancefloor-centered as Steel explores other EDM genres. “Love Somebody” is a fun pop/future bass fusion with a country twist and “Better” is a cool trap track with some R&B flavor. “Obsessed” closes the EP with a mix of future bass and breaks which, surprisingly, makes a great pop background.

Made Out of Stars really showcases Anne Steele’s versatility, both vocally and production-wise and will continue to expand her fan base. If she continues to split her time and talent between cabaret/Broadway and EDM, she’ll pretty much have the pop world covered.

Made Out of Stars is out now and can be streamed on Anne Steele’s Spotify or Soundcloud. Look for her on tour in select cities this spring.
