Your EDM Interview: Nico Santos On Finding His Style

Nico Santos Nico Santos

This week we had the pleasure of getting to know Nico Santos a little better. An artist responsible for an array of global hits including ‘Rooftop’ and ‘Safe,’ we got to hear about what he’s been up to over the course of the summer.

Read on to find out more.

Hey, thanks for taking the time to speak to us! If you had to describe your musical style for someone who hadn’t heard your stuff, how would you sum it up?

I think that my musical style is a combination of all the genres I’ve been listening to as a child and the ones I’ve been writing for other artists lately. If I had to describe my style it would be urban pop with new-soul.

What are some of the most important lessons you’ve learned since you started making music?

It sounds super cliché, but it would be to always stay focused and to work hard for what you want for yourself. If you do and you really give everything, you can do whatever you want.

Where did it start for you? Do you remember what first got you into wanting to create music?

Yes, definitely. It was on my third birthday when my parents got me a Michael Jackson videotape. I got addicted to his music and since that day I knew what I wanted to do.

Who or what are you currently really into, music-wise?

I listen to everything. Right now I’m really into the album of Bazzi and after I watched the Amy Winehouse documentary I’m listening to her old stuff. But I pretty much listen to the stuff that suits my mood the best.

We love ‘Safe,’ and now Deepend has remixed it. Are you a fan of the remake?

I love the remix. Falco did a great Job. He captured the best parts of ‘Safe’ with the right approach. I love the drop as well.

What was the original idea behind the tune?

The idea of the song is basically hoping for that someone to be safe wherever he is. It’s interesting because it can be viewed in so many different situations. Whether it’s someone you’ve lost or someone who moved somewhere else.

Where have you particularly enjoyed playing this summer? Have you had a chance to take a holiday and a little break from music as well?

I loved many shows this year but I think the greatest show was the biggest one where we supported James Arthur and Macklemore in Hannover. I had a little break in Mallorca with my mates but unfortunately only for 4 days!

What’s next for you in 2018 and beyond?

My first album is being finalised this week and we’ll release it next month. That’s insane. I’ve been writing for over 2 years now and it will be something different. Many songs are something you wouldn’t expect.
