See Diplo’s Rise To Fame In New ‘Florida to California’ Mini-Doc

Ever wonder what it’s like being Diplo? If the Viceland series What Would Diplo Do? didn’t get you up to speed, this new mini-doc, Florida to California, definitely will.

Diplo, born Thomas Wesley Pentz, is undisputedly one of the most dynamic forces in music today under his own name, as well as a founding member of Major Lazer. Now, he and director Kyle DePinna are taking us on a musical journey, as this 8-minute documentary chronicles Diplo’s career to date — from his beginnings in South Florida, to his rise to stardom in Philadelphia, and through his latest release California EP, named after the state where it was made and where he now works.

The star-studded doc includes footage of friends and collaborators including Justin Bieber, Madonna, Snoop Dogg, Post Malone, M.I.A, French Montana, Steve Aoki, Skrillex, A-Trak, DRAM, MØ, Dillon Francis, DJA, Switch, Ariel Rechtshaid, Dre Skull, Lee Scratch Perry, Tyler, The Creator, Jasper Dolphin, his Major Lazer bandmates Jillionaire and Walshy Fire and many more. That’s only just scratching the surface of all the amazing talent Diplo has worked with over the years.

The producer’s California EP was released earlier this year on Diplo’s own Mad Decent label, as his first solo body of work in five years. The EP’s six tracks find Diplo collaborating with old friends and new discoveries alike, with features from hip hop phenoms Lil Xan, Trippie Redd, MØ, DRAM, Lil Yachty, Desiigner, Santigold and GoldLink.

A collection of trap-charged remixes debuted this week, with new versions of the California EP tracks from Keys N Krates, UNKWN, QUIX, Jarreau Vandal, TWERL & Max Styler, and Tony Romera. Check it out here.

Oh yeah — and watch Florida to California below.
