Martin Garrix’s long-awaited collaboration with Khalid, “Ocean,” is finally out today. But does it live up to the hype?
Khalid somewhat broke into the dance music world with a feature on Marshmello’s song “Silence,” which has become a worldwide hit with over 800 million streams across all services. He returns on another superstar’s track, teaming up with Martin Garrix for “Ocean.”
To get right to the point, this is easily the most mellow of any Garrix song we’ve heard thus far. It plays more to Khalid’s style than it does to his own, which presents both pros and cons. While we’re happy that Khalid actually sounds as good as he does on this, it’s missing a lot of the Garrix style that we’ve grown accustomed to. The drop features more acoustic elements – guitar, strings, subtle percussion – than some of Martin’s more bombastic tracks.
As always, we should point out that we’re not against artists evolving and trying out new things. But in some cases, those experiments don’t always bear the sweetest fruit.
There will undoubtedly be fans who like this track, just as there will be those who don’t. Listen to “Ocean” below and find out which you are.

a really chill and relaxing song as of Khalid, but Garrix? nope.
