Apple is gearing up for a huge iOS 12 update! Accelerated performance, grouped notifications, and Memoji are only the beginning of what the new software has to offer.
“iOS 12 is designed to make your iPhone and iPad experience even faster, more responsive, and more delightful,” Apple boasts. And, as software VP Craig Federighi explains, Apple is “doubling down on performance” with this update. Huge changes and subtleties alike should prove to make the user experience better than ever.
So what’s new? The Verge breaks down iOS 12 into a number of categories, which we’ll list off briefly below. Learn even more from Apple’s official iOS 12 preview here.
iOS 12 Features
Performance: iOS will feel fater than ever. For example, iPhone 6 models have been tested to launch apps up to 40 percent faster. The keyboard works up to 50 percent faster. And, opening the camera is up to 70 percent faster — a game changer when you want to record that big drop you hear coming.
Screen time: Apple is pushing for its users to get out and enjoy life more. That means a healthy balance between their iPhone and the real world. The new iOS 12 will keep users updated on how much time they’re spending on their devices and break it down by applications. Time limits will be a thing.
Grouped notifications: We all get a rush of anxiety, or even panic when we see how many notifications our phone has racked up while away from it. Now you can dismiss groups of notifications at once and have more control over which apps notify you in the first place.
Animoji: Here’s the fun part! The Animoji characters which first debuted with the iPhone X launch will expand with a ghost, koala, tiger, and tyrannosaurus rex. They can even tell when you stick your tongue out and copy that gesture! Welcome to the future.
Memoji: And, the other fun part — Memoji! With iOS 12 you can create your own customizable character to mimic your own appearance. Skin tone, hairstyle, outfits, accessories, and more can all be switched up from your phone. The Verge calls it a cross between Bitmoji and Nintendo’s Mii characters.
Group FaceTime: Get caught up with all your friends or coworkers at the same time. The new FaceTime will allow you to invite up to 32 people into the same video chat session, instead of just one-on-one calls. Plus, you’ll be able to spice things up with Animoji and Memoji during these FaceTime conversations.
More: Those are the big ones, but with iOS 12 also comes advanced AR experiences, the measure app, photo search and share suggestions, more Siri options and Shortcuts app, plus new CarPlay features, voice memo sync, updates to Apple News, Stocks app, iBooks and more.
We could go on, but it will be best to experience iOS 12 for yourself when it launches this Fall.
