When the Governor’s Ball lineup came out, one act stood out: Silk City. The new collaborative project between Diplo and Mark Ronson, Silk City is very intriguing. We wondered how their music would sound, and now we finally know: groovy as hell.
Silk City debuted with the single “Only Can Get Better” with vocalist Daniel Merriweather. The single is super groovy, hearkening back to the old-school vibe of ’90s house. Merriweather’s vocals may be heavily distorted, but the lyrics help give the track that extra bounce.
The callback to house sound makes perfect sense after reading Diplo’s note about the project. In the track’s YouTube video description, Diplo writes the below:
“Silk City is an homage to some of the greatest dance music cities chicago, london, paris, detroit.”
If this first single is any indication, we expect great things from Silk City.
While Silk City were slated to officially debut at Governor’s Ball next week, they ended up playing a secret set at EDC Las Vegas. TheWrap reports that Ronson joined Diplo for an impromptu set at the Wide Awake Art Car shortly after Diplo finished his kineticFIELD set. The set was so secret that it seems to have passed by almost everyone, even people at EDC this year. Let’s hope the set gets posted online for us to hear.
