High Definition Vinyl Is About To Change The Game For DJs

For most DJs today, CDJs are the way to go. But, one company is heading up a new wave of high definition vinyl that could mean more records and turntables in the mix.

Rebeat Innovation just received $4.8 million in funding for its new way of manufacturing records. The process results in “high definition vinyl.” This would give records longer playing times, louder volume and most importantly — higher fidelity audio.

The HD records that Rebeat Innovation has plans to cook up will be compatible with existing turntables and operate just as records do. Though vinyl DJing will never go away completely, this could preserve the art form for many more years to come.

But, the process to make the high definition vinyl is far from over. Rebeat Innovation is still waiting on a $600,000 laser system it hopes to implement in coming months, which will push production into high gear.

If all goes accordingly, “It will [then] take another eight months to do all the fine adjustments,” CEO Günter Loibl tells Pitchfork.

“So by summer 2019 we shall see the first HD vinyls in the stores.”

The entire process is fascinating. Learn more via HD Vinyl here.
