Calvin Harris has strayed far from his house music sound and only just recently he rediscovered his love for the genre. This wasn’t before diving deep into Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1, which is more pop than anything. However, it sounds like the producer is taking strides to get back into that steady, four on the floor vibe.
“Couple of things on the way that I’m very excited about,” Harris recently shared with fans. “Also I have a new fun rule for myself: Nothing below 124 BPM. I like that tempo a lot, maybe more than 128, and anyone who knows any of my music knows that I fucking love 128.”
Now, he’s gone as far to say that he’s been doing a “disservice” to himself by not allowing house — particularly UK house — to influence his productions more. He opened up to Zane Lowe on Beats 1 about the genre.
“You know there’s amazing, amazing house music coming out of the UK right now. That has inspired me a lot and I love being there and listening to it and that kind of made me realize I’m doing a disservice to myself not drawing the influences that I’ve always drawn from like ’90s house which is my main go-to, as far as influences go.”
Artists like Jauz and JOYRYDE have made way for a new wave of house music, drawing influences directly from that grimy UK sound he’s talking about. If Calvin Harris were to take the same route, it would undoubtedly sound amazing.
His new collaboration with Dua Lipa, “One Kiss” isn’t UK house by any means. However, it’s oozing sex appeal and originality, making for an amazing hit song. Check out a clip below as Calvin talks the new collaboration on Beats 1 via Apple Music.
