REPORT: Miley Cyrus Hit with $300 Million Lawsuit for Swiping “We Can’t Stop” Lyrics

It’s our party we can do what we want… It’s our party we can sue who we want… Wait a second, something doesn’t sound quite right here.

Pop superstar Miley Cyrus is reportedly being hit with a copyright infringement lawsuit for her 2013 single “We Can’t Stop.” The case could cost Miley and her co-writers including Mike Will Made It up to $300 million.

Jamaican singer/songwriter Michael May aka Flourgon says Miley took influence from his 1988 track “We Run Things” and, well, ran with it. “We Can’t Stop” boasts the lyrics “we run things, things don’t run we,” but Flourgon’s track apparently said it first, “we run things, things no run we.”

Court docs filed by Flourgon also claim Miley’s song “substantially incorporated” the vocal melody, rhythm, cadence and inflection of “We Run Things.” He thinks Miley owes it to him, given the chart-topping popularity of “We Can’t Stop.”

This isn’t the first time the track has stirred up some controversy. In August 2013, the leading single from Miley’s Bangerz album reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 — and when the music video followed people couldn’t stop talking about the singer’s provocative new image. Or her twerking.

No word yet from Miley Cyrus’ camp regarding these claims.
