REPORT: Hip-Hop Lyrics Glorifying “Molly” Have Heavily Influenced MDMA Use

According to a new study, hip-hop lyrics have significantly influenced some adults into trying MDMA, also known as “Molly,” for the first time. The link has been talked about for decades, but finally has some applicable research to back the claims.

High profile rappers like Kanye West, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne and Jay-Z are mentioned in the study. In fact, French Montana even has a song titled “Molly.” It’s not mentioned in the report specifically, but Tyga has his own track named “Molly” as well.

So, are rap artists glorifying the substance?

Let’s take it back to the first party / When you tried your first molly – Kanye West, “Blood On The Leaves”

Something ’bout Mary, she gone off that molly / Now the whole party is melting like Dali – Kanye West, “Mercy”

Put molly all in her champagne/ She ain’t even know it – Rick Ross, featured on “U.O.E.N.O”

Pop a molly smoke a blunt– Lil Wayne, featured on “Roman Reloaded”

Those are just a few random examples…

The study reports that 82% of the black adults surveyed by the University of South Florida admitted hip-hop influenced their decision to try MDMA — with lyrics such as these.

University of South Florida scientists are warning people of the dangers of the drug. The team of researchers, led by Dr. Khary Rigg say artists are encouraging use of the risky drug because they are viewed as “highly regarded and trend setting.”

Then, there’s Jay-Z…

I don’t pop molly, I rock Tom Ford – Jay-Z, “Tom Ford”
