The judges have spoken and Helena Hauff is the winner of BBC Radio 1‘s Essential Mix of the Year for 2017, making her the first woman to claim the title!
Just 10 months ago the German DJ graced the airwaves for her BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix debut, only to completely stun with her refined taste for underground techno and electro (not to be confused with electro house). A master behind the decks, Helena’s unmistakable talent truly shined through her 2-hour Essential Mix.
Helena was up against some stiff competition. Other 2017 BBC Radio 1 Essential Mixers included Mura Masa, Nina Kraviz, Don Diablo, Oliver Heldens, a joint mix from Richie Hawtin, Black Madonna & Solomun, and so many more incredible electronic musicians. Hers was chosen from a shortlist by a panel of judges, including last year’s winner, Midland.
Her biggest competition, according to the comments on the announcement, seemed to have been Henry Saiz and Patrice Bäumel, but Hauff came out on top.
Playing this mix back, we simply can’t get enough. Enticing, gritty, and badass to its core — it’s no wonder the judges recognized this as the most essential mix of 2017! Listen to Helena’s debut below and relive Pete Tong’s live announcement via BBC Radio 1 here.
Congrats to Helena Hauff on this well deserved win!
