If Calvin Harris has decided to go head first into funk, then you know what, we’d be okay with it.
After releasing his latest album earlier this year, he’s back with a “Funk Wav” remix to SZA’s “The Weekend” from her own album Ctrl released this year. The original plays like a ’90s R&B ballad from the likes of Destiny’s Child or Aaliyah, but Calvin’s interpretation pushes it back another three decades to the funk golden era.
While the pleasant piano notes are mostly kept intact, the rhythm and vibe of the track transports you to an age when synthesizers were just invented, and groove was king. SZA’s vocals sound perfect with the new style, as well.
