Above & Beyond go literally above and beyond for their latest track “Northern Soul,” an ode to Detroit.
It’s the 3rd track off their highly anticipated forthcoming album Common Ground, out January 26, 2018. Packed full of grit and excitement, “Northern Soul” delivers a new and refreshing take on the iconic city that has helped pave the way for dance music.
More than a typical dance track, this production is one that reaches out and touches your soul deeply, meaningfully. Richard Bedford lends his — for lack of a better word — soulful vocals to bring intimacy to an extremely massive soundscape. There’s something very real about “Northern Soul” that is undeniably heard through the arrangement and melodies woven through this A&B trance-infused masterpiece.
Speaking to “Northern Soul” as a Detroit anthem, Above & Beyond’s Tony McGuinness says:
“We’ve had ties to Detroit since before we met. Along with the world’s best chrome wheels the city gave us all such sweet soul music, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, Stevie Wonder and the rest of the legendary Tamla Motown alumni, The Parliaments, Patti Smith, The White Stripes and Eminem — the list is endless. And let’s not forget techno, without whom etc. So we’re all hugely indebted to Detroit.”
This release joins “Tightrope” and “My Own Hymn,” only further proving that Above & Beyond are bringing it like never before with Common Ground.
