Billboard has announced it’s coveted Hot 100 chart will soon be ranked by a weighted tier system in which paid streams are worth more than YouTube views.
This comes as Post Malone recently nabbed the #1 spot with his new hit “Rockstar” featuring 21 Savage, which racked up tens of millions of views on YouTube with a strange looped version of the track. He beat the system for now, but it could have played out way differently with these newly proposed streaming rules.
YouTube plays were only recently taken into consideration for charting purposes and now things are changing up yet again. Seeking to provide the best representation of popular music, Billboard reveals its plans to implement the weighted tier system starting in 2018.
The Top 200 Albums chart will also take into consideration paid streams and ad-supported streams.
This will make for an interesting next few months of rankings as the charts adjust.
