Ed Sheeran Shatters Spotify’s Most Streamed Song Record

Congratulations Ed Sheeran! The English singer-songwriter and producer kicked off the year smashing Spotify records when he released single “Shape of You” back in January. Now, 9 months later the song has broken records again by becoming the most streamed song on Spotify of all time as of September 22nd.

Right now the song is at a staggering 1.318 billion which puts it just ahead of Drake’s “One Dance” at 1.317 billion while “Closer” by The Chainsmokers is ways behind at 1.15 billion. “Shape of You” remains firmly in the top 20 of the Spotify Global Top 50 bringing in roughly 2.23 million streams per day since September started while “One Dance” remains closer to 150 bringing in roughly 666K streams in the same time period.

To top it all off, Ed Sheeran has reclaimed his position as the most streamed artist on Spotify (based on monthly listeners) now that the “Despacito” craze seems to be slowing down. He currently sits at just over 40 million monthly listeners. Taylor Swift comes in second with 36.5 million, Calvin Harris is third with 35 million, Daddy Yankee (of “Despacito”) now sits in fourth with 34.4 while fellow Latin artist J Balvin rounds out the top 5 with 33.7 million. Ed being #1 is all that more impressive when you realize that he hasn’t put out new original music since Divide in early March while all the other artists have all released within the last three months.

Finally, Ed moves to #2 in terms of all-time streamed artists on Spotify with over 10 billion plays – second only to Drake on the platform.
