Study: Those Who Get Goosebumps Listening To Music Have Different Brain Structures Than Those Who Don’t

You know that feeling when the drop is just too good, and the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end? When the rise lasts for minutes, just going higher and higher, more and more intense, and your arms are so covered in goosebumps it feels like the surface of a basketball?

Turns out, if you feel that way about music, your brain might have a different structure than others’. This is all according to a new study by USC PhD student Matthew Sachs, published in Oxford Academic. Neuroscience explains, what this means is that these individuals “have a higher volume of fibers that connect their auditory cortex to the areas associated with emotional processing, which means the two areas communicate better.”

So far, the study has only been conducted with 20 participants, which is not nearly enough to demonstrate any kind of statistical significance. However, Sachs is hopeful that his findings could be used in the future, even in the treatment of depressive disorders.

“Depression causes an inability to experience pleasure of everyday things,” he says. “You could use music with a therapist to explore feelings.”
