The Chainsmokers have been in the Billboard Hot 100 for over a year, and while that’s a major accomplishment, it’s not sitting well with some. In fact, Billboard has forcibly removed the track from the Hot 100 entirely, even as it was sitting at #39 just last week.
This is all due to a rule imposed by Billboard wherein a song can be removed from the Hot 100 if it places below the top 25 after 52 weeks. While this may seem arbitrary and maybe even spiteful, Billboard asserts that it is so that songs like “Closer” don’t just sit on the Hot 100 taking away spots from new songs that may otherwise have charted.
In fact, it’s likely that the same rule was used to remove “Don’t Let Me Down” from the chart, as well, as it too spent exactly 52 weeks on the chart. 
While those who dislike “Closer,” for whatever reason, might be ecstatic that they don’t have to hear about the song’s chart position anymore, it’s a shame that we’ll never see just how long the song would have lasted.
