When it comes to music streaming, you probably don’t realize this but Google is low-key killing it. Not only do they already have Google Play Music, a dedicated streaming service similar to Spotify and Apple Music, but they also have YouTube as well – still one of the largest sources of music discovery on the internet today.
Now, Google is announcing that they’ll be streamlining and concentrating their streaming services internally by merging Google Play Music with YouTube’s premium paid streaming service YouTube Red to create one new streaming platform per YouTube’s head of music Lyor Cohen.
Cohen’s own comments on the matter related to how Google, and YouTube, are currently working with the music industry on building their music platforms. He stated that “in my mind, the missing piece on building these businesses is collaborating with the [music] industry, and not just making deals and going away and seeing how it works.”
The initial comment was made by Cohen on a panel for the New Music Seminar conference, but Google has since released an official statement to The Verge promising to notify users of any changes beforehand.
“Music is very important to Google and we’re evaluating how to bring together our music offerings to deliver the best possible product for our users, music partners and artists. Nothing will change for users today and we’ll provide plenty of notice before any changes are made.”
There’s no word on any timeframe for this proposed update just yet, so we’ll have to just keep our ears to the ground.
