Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” Feat. Justin Bieber Breaks Global Streaming Record

Despacito,” the chart-topping hit by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, featuring Justin Bieber on the remix, just became them most-streamed song ever across the globe!

The track has racked up 4.6 billion streams across all platforms in just 6 months, for the original version and the bilingual remix featuring the Biebs — surpassing his own hit “Sorry” and remixes (4.38 billion) that previously held the global streaming title. Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” holds steady in the third spot with 4.07 billion.

“What’s happened with this song is just insane,” Luis Fonsi told BBC News of the massive hit that transcends cultures. “I don’t want to use the word accident because I was trying to write a hit, but I didn’t plan for it to cross over. I just wanted to make people dance.”

The song, which has reached #1 success in 35 countries quickly hit #1 in Latin America when it was released, but then Bieber’s star power brought “Despacito” some well-deserved attention in the English-speaking world.

“I come from Puerto Rico and I live in Miami. We’re living in an interesting time right now when people want to divide us. They want to build walls,” Fonsi explained. “And for a song to bring people and cultures together, that’s what makes me proud.”

While “Despacito” is Spanish for “slowly,” there’s clearly no slowing down for this fire track! Check out Fonsi’s full interview with BBC News, and stream the track again right here!
