Very rarely will I find a song that aligns almost perfectly with my personal taste. The Devault remix of Billie Eilish’s “Bellyache” is one of those songs.
From the jazzy rhodes in the break, to the extremely unique sound design in the drop, this remix is definitely one I will continue to play for the months to come. Devault serves Billie Eilish’s vocal sweet justice throughout the entirety of the break, providing a bed of both solemn chords and upbeat drums to match the emotion in the vocal. Adding to the sonic interest are occasional vocal chants, as well as a stuttering synth layered perfectly in the background. The same synth then provides a seamless transition to the drop – one of most beautiful and well produced drops I’ve heard in quite a while.
The melodic call and response between the lead and Billie’s vocal is what truly stands out to me. Despite the simplicity of both melodic phrases, the combination of the two is just enough to hit home, and more than enough to be stuck in your head for days to come. Adding to that, the sound is not only unique, but powerful – as odd as it sounds, you can hear emotion through whiny-ness of the lead. Hats off to Devault, you killed this one.
