Prismo has become a household name with future bass driven chords, stunning melodies, and most recently beautiful vocals. The young producer has already garnered a lot of attention in the industry, landing him a spot at this year’s inaugural Middlelands Festival, shows at this year’s SXSW, and support from MrSuicideSheep and Trap Nation. It’s safe to say that this kid is on the right path. I was able to catch up with him to talk about his newest single “Serenity”, his plans for 2017, his Drop It Low mix series, and upcoming shows and releases. Take a read below:
2017 has been your biggest year yet. With that said, you must be eager to keep the momentum going. Can you give us some insight into what you’re excited for for the rest of the year?
I’m really excited to expand on my live set and introduce a new wave of Prismo sounds that were recorded and written in a live setting. I just recently played my first set with live drums, keys, and vocals at Middlelands in the beginning of May. I think this refreshing new take on my performance is really going to drive my current momentum forward. 
What inspired you to start singing on your records?
I’ve always loved singing and serenading my family and friends. I even sang in a couple bands and cover projects in grade school! It just felt natural to begin adding my own vocals to my songs.
Are you still going to school on top of touring and creating music?
I was a full time student at Texas A&M for the past two years and I’ve recently taken a step back from school to focus on my music career. I am still studying and taking a very light online course load through Texas A&M, but touring and creating music is my top priority now.
What got you into music in the first place?
My father was a musician and I grew up listening to all different kinds of bands and compositions. When I was 7 years old, I started playing drums and then soon picked up bass, guitar, and piano. My dad sparked my passion for music and that passion continues to grow everyday.
You’ve played some huge shows this year. (Middlelands, UME, SXSW) What has been your favorite? What shows do you have coming up that you’re most excited for?
Middlelands was probably my favorite show so far. I played a 100% original set with live instruments and the whole preparation for that show taught me a lot of valuable lessons. As far as shows coming up, I’m most excited to play Night Nation Run, a HUGE glow-run and music festival. I first played a side stage at a Night Nation Run event two years ago, and now they’re bringing me back to headline the show. It’s gonna be fun. There are a few other shows I’m really excited about but I can’t talk about them yet.
I want to talk about your new release, “Serenity” for quick second. What was the inspiration behind the lyrics?
Serenity is about finding peace regardless of the chaos around you. When I “find my sweet serenity” I know I’m ready to move on, forgive, or grow from whatever situation I was struggling with. Serenity was inspired by the finding your light at the end of the tunnel when overcoming challenges. The message of the song really hit home with me and that’s why the vocal is longer than your typical prismo lyric.
Did you start with the lyrics, the melody, or the arrangement first for “Serenity”?
I started with the vocal hook, it just popped into my head.
What was your favorite part of making the track?
My favorite part of writing the track was experimenting with new sounds and adding powerful harmonies to the lead vocal. The whole vocal has this warm vintage feel but it’s still in your face in the front of the mix.
When can we expect the next Drop It Low mix show?
Sometime soon! And expect the next installment of my Drop It Low series to be live.
Which artists are you most inspired by these days?
Recently I’ve been really inspired by artists like Illenium, k?d, and Hex Cougar. I’ve also been going back and listening to a lot of older Madeon and Nero songs.
Who do you want to collaborate with the most?
I really want to work with artists that complement the live Prismo sound. Illenium, San Holo, and Louis The Child are a few I can think of.
I’m told you have singles coming out on NCS and Trap Nation’s Lowly Palace this summer. Can you tell us anything about those tracks? What can we expect?
Both of those tracks are some of my best work to date. My song on NCS includes a really raw vocal session — probably my favorite vocal/lyrics yet.
Your music has moved in a distinct direction in the past year with your take on the future bass sound. Can we expect this trend to continue, or is your music still evolving?
I’m maintaining a lot of the darker Prismo themes that can be heard in my past releases. But some parts of my sound are still evolving. I’ve learned a lot about myself creatively lately, so prepare yourself for some fresh but familiar sounds in the coming months.
