It hasn’t even been a week since Ed Sheeran came out of nowhere to tease this forthcoming third album, Divide, with two huge new singles and he’s already starting to shatter records.
Since release, “Shape of You” has been sitting atop the global Spotify daily chart with “Castle on the Hill” right behind it, and in six days, the singles have amassed over 46 million and over 32 million streams respectively. The first day saw the two of them combine for over 13 million streams (13,037,037 to be exact) in 24 hours. “Shape of You” narrowly edged out “Castle on the Hill” with a ‘slim,’ relatively at least, 700,000 streams.
The previous 24-hour record was held by One Direction when they released “Drag Me Down” in 2015 – a number which was easily shattered by both of Ed Sheeran’s singles, though having two of them together certainly helped his debut totals. One Direction’s previous record was 4,759,698 streams in a day, which was beat out by Sheeran with 6,868,642 streams on “Shape Of You.”
Divide will be out March 3 on Atlantic.
