Breaking Down The Coachella 2017 Lineup

One of the biggest festivals in the world dropped its lineup yesterday: Coachella.

Promising headlining performances from Beyonce, Radiohead, and Kendrick Lamar, the festival will once again bring hundreds of thousands of people to Indio in April for two weekends of music, fun, and a whole lot more.

But before you saddle up for the drive there, let’s take a closer look at the lineup.

There are six second-line EDM acts who will be rocking the festival: Martin Garrix, DJ Snake, Dillon Francis, Empire of the Sun, Justice, and Porter Robinson & Madeon, the latter playing their final show on the “Shelter” tour.

Beyond that, there are many electronic acts who will likely take the stage at Gobi or Mojave for their live performances: Moderat, Bonobo, Tycho, Crystal Castles, Classixx, Breakbot, and Four Tet.

However, the overall landscape of the lineup leaves much to be desired. For a festival as large and important as Coachella, there are very few surprises on the lineup. Leaving out Hans Zimmer for a moment, there aren’t any big surprises or reunions that would leave the general populace salivating; and as for the Sahara Tent, there are a lot of great acts to expect – Jai Wolf, for example – but overall it’s extremely meh in comparison to previous years.

The Yuma tent, on the other hand, is looking pretty solid: Dixon, Tale of Us, Ben UFO, Belleville Three (Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson), Richie Hawtin, Sasha, Solomun, Bicep, Maya Jane Coles, Martinez Bros, Hot Since 82, Loco Dice, Patrick Topping, Hannah Wants, Eli & Fur and more.

Still, there are two big EDM stages that have yet to be announced: Do Lab and Heineken House. Both of these areas were huge successes last year, and could potentially carry the torch in 2017 with regards to dance music, while the rest of the basics flock to Sahara.

As for social engagement, the initial announcement of the lineup on Twitter reached a fever pitch yesterday with 510,000 tweets about the festival. (Note: this is just mentions of the event @Coachella, #Coachella, #Coachella2017, and doesn’t include the many Tweets with just artist names.)

The most tweeted about artist of the festival is none other than Beyonce. Coming as the first solo female headliner in ten years (following Björk in 2007), people are clearly excited. After her comes the other two headliners, Kendrick Lamar and Radiohead, in that order.

However, the #4 most-tweeted about artist on the lineup is none other than Hans Zimmer, who came as a massive surprise on the lineup. Everyone is extremely curious what kind of show he’ll have at the festival. The top 10 most-tweeted artists are rounded out by Travis Scott, DJ Snake, Mac Miller, Gucci Mane, Tove Lo, and Bon Iver.
