Every year a slew of great producers and DJs contribute to the legendary Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1, hosted by Pete Tong and aired every Friday night in the U.K. Featuring everyone from Daft Punk to Nero, the Essential Mix continually challenges artists to give their all for its two-hour runtime.
At the end of the year, a panel selects a pool of five mixes and pits them against each other to decide the Essential Mix of the Year. This year, nominees included Dixon b2b Âme, Dusky, Leon Vynehall, Midland and Recondite, and last night Pete Tong announced on BBC Radio 1 that Midland won this year’s Essential Mix of the Year. A rising star in the house music scene, Midland released the lauded Blush EP and the anthemic “Final Credits” track this year among other notable achievements. He joins the ranks of Eric Prydz, Swedish House Mafia, Caribou, Above & Beyond, Flying Lotus and other winners of the award with his mix, which included tracks ranging from Jai Paul to The Beatles.
