Afrojack Has Been Saying He’s Not EDM Since 2014 & Nothing Has Changed

When you’re a major artist in EDM like David Guetta, Diplo, Skrillex, etc., you get interview requests daily. It just comes with the position. Hopefully the questions you get are varied enough to avoid repeating yourself ad nauseum, but sometimes a prepared answer is necessary for when a certain question is asked so many times. However, when a prepared answer persists for at least three years, something’s up.

We stumbled upon a new interview with Afrojack, published today by Daily Pioneer. While reading through the piece, one answer caught our eye.

In one of the interviews you said that you are not an EDM guy. How else do you describe yourself?
I’m not EDM. If I wanted to be a successful EDM artist, I wouldn’t put 80 per cent of everything back into the show. I would be chilling, demanding 20 hotel rooms, playing for one-and-a-half hours and being miserable. But I don’t want to be an EDM artist.  I want to make something that people can be proud of. I want to make an album my grandma and my fans are going to like. I want to make my grandma understand a drop and make club fans understand a song.

This seemed strangely familiar, so we looked back through our records and found we had written an article about essentially the same answer from November 2015 in Asian Age, 13 months ago.

I want to make an album my grandma and my fans are going to like. I want to make my grandma understand a drop and make club fans understand a song. I’m not EDM. If I wanted to be a successful EDM artist, I wouldn’t put 80 per cent of everything back into the show. I would be chilling, demanding 20 hotel rooms, playing for one-and-a-half hours and being miserable as f***. But I don’t want to be an EDM artist. I want to make something that people can be proud of.

Since the question from Daily Pioneer directly referenced one of his past interviews, it didn’t seem totally out of place. However, the 99% identical wording of the answer made us curious.

We pushed deeper and found another interview from May 2014 with Billboard, again containing a quote from Afrojack with the same basic premise, and identical language.

I’m not EDM. If I wanted to be a successful EDM artist, I wouldn’t put 80 percent of everything back into the show. I would be chilling, demanding 20 hotel rooms, playing for one-and-a-half hours and being miserable as f-. But I don’t want to be an EDM artist – I want to make something that people can be proud of.

Guess what… 31 months later and he’s still kind of EDM. One could say that he’s even a successful EDM artist.

That’s not to say that Afrojack hasn’t completely revamped his sound in 2016. With tracks like “Gone,” “Hey,” an unreleased remix of “Panda,” a track rumored to be titled “Say Goodbye,” and his remix for Major Lazer & Justin Bieber’s “Cold Water,” Afrojack has definitely branched out this year.

Unfortunately, “I’m not EDM” is getting a little tired and old. We say he should embrace his brand and double down, release more dope new music, and keep pushing his newfound authenticity. Recycled interview answers would only seem to throw that into disarray.
