House Pioneer Derrick Carter Kicked Out of Berghain After His Set

Legendary Chicago house music creator Derrick Carter took to his social media this week to condemn notorious Berlin-based venue Berghain after being kicked out of its DJ booth following his performance. His set at the location’s famous Panorama Bar was held alongside such notable acts as Carl Craig, Maceo Plex and Alinka, coming as one of the genre’s most inclusive and jam-packed list of all-stars in recent memory.

After he finished playing in the upstairs section, Carter said that he was “hanging out in the DJ booth. . . with Carl Craig and his wife.” Someone, likely a member of Berghain’s security detail, approached the group and told both Carter and Craig’s wife that they needed to get out.

“I told him that I was DJing before Carl and that this is his wife. He says, ‘Yeah, but you’re not the only ones,’ and kicks her out too.”

Felix da Housecat, Seth Troxler and Jesse Rose each joined in on the conversation with their own thoughts on the Berlin club. Felix, having been once denied entry to the club entirely, said to not get him started on the matter, while Troxler and Rose added the hashtag #blackdjsmatter and “some things never change,” respectively.

Clearly, despite Berghain’s towering reputation of elite and obscure authority when it comes to those who enter, many of the genre’s most important members are displeased with the way it handles those who helped bring the movement to its current state in the first place.
