We took some time to exchange words with East Coast singer/writer Chelsea Cutler about her new partnership with Ultra, and what we can expect from her musically in the coming months.
Thanks for chatting, Chelsea. How would you describe yourself as an artist in three words?
Honest, Authentic, Prolific.
You’re from the East Coast. What would you say from your upbringing there has influenced you the most?
New England has a really high concentration of boarding schools so naturally I ended up at one, haha. Music was so important to our school’s community, so I was surrounded by all these people who shared my love for music. My friends at school were the reason I started listening to all of the artists I still love so much today.
What is your usual process when you go about writing a song? Do you have a certain way of making music?
Honestly, it varies so much. Sometimes I lay down a little production and then write the lyrics over it. Sometimes I write lyrics first. Sometimes I can bang a song out in twenty minutes and sometimes it takes me weeks. It really depends on what I’m feeling. But the variation keeps it fresh. I prefer to not have a specific process.
You’ve signed with Ultra, congrats! What do you want to achieve with them?
Thank you! I really am excited about the opportunity Ultra has given me to work on my own artist project, as well as pursue collaborations with producers. I think what I want to do with Ultra is achieve a healthy balance between my original material and my collaborations. And I think they will help me do that very successfully.
If you could work with any artist (living or dead), who would you choose and why?
Bon Iver, hands down. He is the most innovative, honest artist and his music is really so beautiful.
Where can we catch you performing in the next couple of months?
I honestly don’t know. I’m still in college so I’m stuck at school for the time being!
Any words of wisdom for artists who want to breakthrough?
As cliche as it is, just be yourself. There’s a good chance that some of the seven billion people on earth will like what you bring to the table. And for female artists particularly, be strong and be confident.
