The Spirit of Suwannee Music Park hosts a number of events throughout the year, but one music festival held at the site in particular has grown considerably over the past few years. Suwannee Hulaween is one of Florida’s most successful music festivals over the past few years, bringing together everything from jam to house, hip-hop to alternative rock and jazz to soul for a three-day event with camping, art and amazing vibes during the Halloween weekend. This year, Hulaween pulled all the stops to curate an excellent lineup, and Your EDM is here to help pick out the three best acts to see on each day. Read our picks below!
Friday, October 28
1. Claude VonStroke, 12-1:30 a.m. @ Spirit Lake Stage
The founder of Dirtybird Records and the man who has helped artists like Justin Martin, J. Phlip and others reach bigger audiences, Claude VonStroke makes his Hulaween debut in the heat of the night at the Spirit Lake Stage, situated right next to Spirit Lake and all of its wonderful art fixtures and displays. VonStroke plays genres such as booty bass, deep house and even some gangsta’ rap cuts, a perfect soundtrack for the night festivities.
2. Boys Noize, 11 p.m.-12 a.m. @ The Patch
Hulaween spared no mercy in slotting some of the best EDM acts for the festival, including a rare appearance from producer and DJ Boys Noize. Boys Noize is one of the unique acts in EDM who has remained prevalent for so long, continually putting out quality albums, singles and remixes. This DJ set is Noize’s first non-Miami Florida appearance in ages and shouldn’t be missed.
3. Brodinski, 6-7 p.m. @ The Patch
Another rare artist for a Florida festival, the French producer and DJ Brodinski performs in the evening on The Patch stage on Friday night. Brodinski got his start producing house and techno alongside the esteemed Gesaffelstein, but has since switched to a more hip-hop influence and direction. His sets often blend the two genres together, so expect a mishmash of gangsta’-flavored house and techno.
Saturday, October 29
1. Bob Moses, 9-10 p.m. @ Spirit Lake Stage
The Spirit Lake Stage seems to be hosting some of the best artists of the weekend, and Bob Moses is certainly no exception. The duo began with plenty of deep house hits, but their latest album Days Gone By scored the duo welcome crossover appeal with radio-friendly hooks among club-ready basslines and sultry lyrics. Their show is a true display of live electronic music and deserves your attention.
2. RÜFÜS DU SOL, 6:45-7:45 p.m. @ The Patch
Another live electronic music group that has been making waves this year, RÜFÜS DU SOL released a highly rated album early this year in the form of Bloom. Ever since the Australian trio has played the likes of Coachella, Panorama and other huge festivals. They’re another group that combines deeper electronic elements with pop sensibilities, and by all accounts their live shows are a marvel.
3. Disclosure (DJ Set), 12:30-1:45 a.m. @ The Meadow
Hulaween surprised everyone by grabbing a DJ set from Disclosure as a headliner, but they’ve well earned it after the success of their 2015 album Caracal. While a live set would’ve been welcome from the British duo, their DJ sets do allow them to showcase their own productions among the tracks that inspire them. Their headlining set on Saturday will certainly be the dance party of the weekend.
Sunday, October 30
1. Big Gigantic featuring The Motet, 8:15-9:30 p.m. @ The Meadow
It’s been a few years since Big Gigantic has played Hulaween, but their return is also the closing performance of the entire festival. For this set, Big G will be bringing fellow Hulaween artist and funk band The Motet along for a collaborative performance. Among the usual live electronic and saxophone performance, this set will include a flurry of instruments to showcase the jammier side of electronic music.
2. Bells and Robes, 7:15-8:15 p.m. @ Campground Stage
For Hulaween attendees looking for a rising act destined for a huge future, look no further than Bells & Robes. The Atlanta-based duo has produced several stellar releases thus far, taking the best of their inspirations and recontextualizing them for their own distinct sound.
3. What So Not, 6:15-7:15 p.m. @ Spirit Lake Stage
Last but certainly not least, future bass producer What So Not rounds out our list with a performance on the Spirit Lake Stage. Since making the project his own after splitting with Flume, What So Not has created several great releases, ranging from his Gemini and Divide & Conquer EPs that released in 2015 and 2016 respectively to his smash hit collaboration “Tell Me” with RL Grime.
