Fresh on the heels of their debut album, GTA brought their Good Times Ahead tour to Los Angeles’ famed Shrine Auditorium this past weekend, and it was a different type of set for the Miami duo. I’ve seen them perform before at 2014’s HARD Day of the Dead, and this set was far more melodic and futuristic. Although they interspersed some of their hits, including their legendary collab with Diplo “Boy, oh Boy,” last weekend at the Shrine was about the Good Times Ahead album and showing off what GTA can achieve as artists.
Trap music was the main theme for the evening. Falcons got the crowd warmed up with his mix of futuristic trap, which the crowd was clearly feeling as they started to fill up the Shrine floor. Next came LOUDPVCK and they just absolutely tore the roof off the place. It was trap again, but it was so hard-edged and so hard-hitting, just wow, I can’t stress how impressed I was with LOUDPVCK. Again, the crowd was just absolutely floored by the set, all before the main headliners took the stage.
Up next was the Miami boys, and they did not disappoint. Like I said before, the foundation of bass was there, but this was a far different performance from what I was expecting. They just went through a barrage of bangers, each with their own unique feel and groove. From uptempo, hip-hop influenced jams like their collab with Vince Staples “Little Bit of This” and their savage heater with Iamsu! “Contract” to more melodic, downtempo tracks like “Get it All” a sexy collab with Wax Motif, “Heartbeat” and the UK garage-inspired “In my Nature” GTA showed how genres don’t matter. 
GTA used the stage and lighting of the Shrine to full effect, as well. The light panels behind the stage were manipulated to create a sort of 3D bowl – imagine an empty horizontal pool, except it was filled with all sorts of light block combos and graphics. During GTA’s closing set, lasers also fired from the top of the massive screen, a very nice touch.
