Twitter To Change 140-Character Limit To Exclude Media & Quoted Tweets

According to a report from The Verge, Twitter users can expect a significant change in the way the site’s algorithm counts their 140-character tweet limit. On September 19, Twitter will discontinue counting media attachments (such as gifs, images, videos and polls) and quoted tweets as part of the character limit, allowing users to increase the amount they’re able to type by a substantial margin.

Furthermore, usernames that are tagged at the beginning of tweets will not count towards the limit. The social media site has not made it clear whether all of these changes will go into effect simultaneously, or if some will be rolled out at a later time.

“This is the most notable change we’ve made in recent times around conversation in particular, and around giving people the full expressiveness of the 140 characters. I’m excited to see even more dialog because of this.” – CEO Jack Dorsey
